Mogadishu (Dawan Africa) – Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (NIEBC) on Saturday granted certificates of registration to 14 political parties, including groups led by former federal and regional leaders.
Among those registered is the Progress and National Unity Party, co-founded by Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden, former President of South West State and former Speaker of the Parliament of Somalia, and Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman, former Speaker of the House of the People and a current federal MP.
The National Shade Party, chaired by former Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke, was also among those receiving official recognition.

NIEBC Chairman Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan said the newly certified parties had fulfilled all requirements set by the Commission. “It is a great honor for us today to issue certificates to 14 political parties that have met all conditions. It is especially significant that many senior politicians have succeeded in formally registering their associations,” he stated.
With the addition of these 14, the number of officially recognized political parties in Somalia now stands at 57, following the 43 that had already secured certification.
The registration comes after an agreement reached on August 25 between Villa Somalia and leaders of several political associations. Two days before that deal, the Commission reopened the registration process for political parties, which concluded on September 6.
