Kenya, 18 November, 2025 - After a long blackout days A new ENCOMM generator arrived in Wajir on Thursday last week.
The unit has a rated capacity of 1MW, with an effective output of 0.7MW, and installation is currently underway.
Once operational, Wajir’s total power capacity will rise from 2.3MW to 3MW, against a peak demand of about 3.3MW.
A second generator of similar capacity is expected before the end of the month, which will help further stabilise supply.
However, as the County Headquarters, Wajir Town distributes power to several neighbouring settlements, which often leaves Wajir East with less than it needs.
At present, about 500KW is shared with Wajir West up to Griftu, Elnur/Tula Tula Ward in Eldas, Tarbaj Town and its surrounding areas, as well as Leheley, Lagboqol, and Argani in Wajir South. This widespread sharing significantly reduces the power available to Wajir East.

The project is expected to be completed and commissioned by the end of next year, providing a long-term and sustainable solution to Wajir’s energy challenges.
In the medium term, leaders from Wajir and Mandera are jointly pursuing the extension of the national grid from Isiolo or Garissa to Mandera, which will transform power reliability across the region once realized.
