Kenya, 25 December 2025 - Cameroon got their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign off to a winning start, edging Gabon 1–0 in their Group F opener at the Stade d’Agadir on Wednesday evening, thanks to an early goal from Karl Etta Eyong.
The result gives the Indomitable Lions a valuable three points and a positive platform as they look to progress from a competitive group.
The decisive moment came early in the match. Just six minutes in, Cameroon seized the initiative when Bryan Mbeumo played a precise through pass that split Gabon’s defence, finding Etta Eyong inside the box.
The Levante forward reacted quickly, sliding a first-time finish through the legs of goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba to send the crowd into celebration. The goal was confirmed after a brief VAR check, which ruled out any offside.
Cameroon dominated the early phases with a high tempo and sharp transitional play, but Gabon grew into the contest as the game progressed. Despite their best efforts, Gabon struggled to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Cameroonian defence marshalled effectively by Nouhou Tolo and Devis Epassy in goal.

Gabon responded by introducing experienced attackers, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Mario Lemina, in the 33rd minute in an attempt to inject more creativity and firepower.
However, the Panthers were unable to convert their chances, with their best opportunities either well-saved or narrowly missing the target.
Cameroon’s victory is significant for several reasons. It marks their first AFCON win over Gabon in tournament history after previous meetings in 2010 and 2017 ended in defeat and a draw respectively. It also lifts them level with Ivory Coast in Group F after the Elephants secured a 1–0 win earlier in the day.
For Cameroon, the result provides a morale boost under new management as they look to build momentum, while Gabon will be aiming to bounce back in their next group match. The Indomitable Lions’ next fixture sees them face reigning champions Ivory Coast, a clash that could prove decisive in the race to qualify for the knockout stages.
