JUBA, SOUTH SUDAN — In a decisive move to address the recent disturbances in Nasir, the African Union Commission has deployed its 'Panel of the Wise' to Juba, aiming to mediate the escalating tensions and support reconciliation efforts in South Sudan. This deployment underscores the AU's commitment to fostering sustainable peace in the region.
Strategic Discussions and Deployment
The decision follows fruitful discussions between AU Commission Chairperson H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf Ali and South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, focusing on the urgent need for enhanced mediation strategies and the effective implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS).
AU's Commitment to Peace
"The AU stands firm in its support for the people and government of South Sudan. We are dedicated to facilitating dialogue, reconciliation, and sustainable peace," stated H.E. Mahmoud Youssouf Ali. The Panel of the Wise, comprising esteemed leaders, will engage with various stakeholders in Juba to reduce tensions and promote meaningful dialogue.
Collaborative Efforts for Stability
This initiative is part of a larger effort by the AU, in collaboration with regional bodies like the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the East African Community (EAC), and global partners including the United Nations, to ensure a peaceful transition in South Sudan. The AU has called on all parties to diligently uphold the provisions of the peace agreement and stressed the importance of a collective effort in rebuilding the nation.
