Ethiopia, 5 December 2025 - African Union Commission Chairperson Mahamoud Ali Youssouf welcomed the peace agreement signed in Washington, D.C., between Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Democratic Republic of Congo President Félix Tshisekedi, describing the accord as a pivotal milestone in advancing peace, security, and stability in the Great Lakes region.
Youssouf commended the constructive support provided by the United States, including the personal involvement of President Donald Trump, whose engagement helped create the conditions necessary for this breakthrough. He also praised the diplomatic role of the State of Qatar and its continued readiness to support African-led peace initiatives.
He noted that his participation, alongside several African leaders, in the historic signing ceremony underscores the significance of this achievement for the continent. Youssouf highlighted the pivotal role played by Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé in facilitating the negotiations, as well as the earlier mediation efforts of Angolan President João Lourenço.

He further acknowledged the complementary contributions of the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) throughout the process.
The Chairperson urged both parties to demonstrate genuine commitment to implementing the terms of the agreement, in both letter and spirit, in order to pave the way for meaningful reconciliation, strengthened regional cooperation, and lasting peace.
The African Union Commission reaffirmed its readiness to fully support regional efforts aimed at securing long-term stability and prosperity in the Great Lakes region.
