Ethiopia, 7 November 2025 — The African Union (AU) has held preliminary discussions to assess the worsening situation in Sudan and the growing risks facing civilians amid ongoing conflict and a deteriorating humanitarian crisis.
The meeting brought together Edem Wosornu Ding, the AU Special Envoy on Prevention of Genocide, and Bankole Adeoye, the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security.
The two officials discussed alarming developments on the ground, the rise in violations against civilians, and strategic options to strengthen early warning systems and coordinate regional and international efforts to prevent further atrocities.
Special Envoy Ding underscored the urgent need for swift and effective action within the AU’s mandate on peace, security, and human rights, stressing that preventing genocide is a collective responsibility shared by all member states.
For his part, Commissioner Adeoye reaffirmed the AU Commission’s commitment to intensifying cooperation with the Special Envoy’s Office to develop practical and coordinated strategies for an early and effective response to the Sudanese crisis.
The meeting comes amid growing warnings of a worsening humanitarian catastrophe that threatens the stability of Sudan and the wider region as fighting continues and safe humanitarian corridors remain limited.
