USA, 27, September 2025 – The African Union (AU) has warned that Somalia’s recent political and security progress risks being undone unless international partners provide urgent and sustainable financing for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The warning was issued at a high-level event on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday.
The meeting was co-convened by the Federal Government of Somalia, the AU, the United Nations, and the United Kingdom, while Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud chaired discussions.
AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commended Somalia for achievements such as securing debt relief and gaining a seat on the UN Security Council.
However, he cautioned that fragility remains and Al-Shabaab continues to pose a serious threat to stability.
Youssouf stressed that AUSSOM will require $196 million in 2025 to maintain its mandate. He noted that the AU has doubled its Peace Fund contribution to $20 million, but warned this was not enough to meet operational demands.
“Yet without urgent, predictable, and sustainable financing, hard-won achievements risk being undone,” the AU statement read.
The AU emphasized that AUSSOM is the organization’s final mission in Somalia, designed as a transitional framework that will help the country assume full ownership of its security.
Meanwhile, Villa Somalia stated that the federal government and international partners had presented financial plans and agreed to establish a budgetary subsidy to ensure support for AUSSOM, although the exact amount of the subsidy was not disclosed.
