Somalia, 21 Janauary 2026 The Central Prison of Beledweyne was reopened on Tuesday after undergoing significant repairs and security reviews.
Twenty-one detainees, who were temporarily held at the Beledweyne police station, have been transferred back to the prison. Among them, 10 are convicted prisoners while the other 11 are awaiting trial.
The head of the Central Prison of Beledweyne, Hassan Jirow Aamin, emphasized the importance of ensuring the proper conditions for prisoners and the officers guarding them.
He noted that if prisoners are denied their rights, conflicts between them and guards could arise, adding it is necessary to improve prison conditions to prevent such incidents.

The Governor of Hiran, Mohamed Hussein Mohamed Wali, stated that the regional administration is aware of the conditions of prisoners in the Central Prison of Beledweyne, urging prison officials to intensify security measures and enhance the protection of detainees.
The Governor said the regional administration would take full responsibility for the conditions of the prisoners and the security of the prison, as part of the ongoing efforts to improve security and public services in the region.
The Deputy Minister of Justice for the Hirshabelle Government, Mahad Mohamed Hassan Mahadalle, stated that the renovations at the Central Prison are vital for strengthening security and protecting the rights of prisoners. He further mentioned that the prison, now reopened, needs to address the various challenges faced by detainees due to difficult circumstances.
