Kenya, 28 November 2025 - Boyd Were has been elected the new Member of Parliament for Kasipul, taking over the seat once held by his father, the late Ong’ondo Were.
The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) candidate secured 16,819 votes, defeating independent contender Philip Aroko, who managed 8,476 votes, according to final results released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) early Friday.
The Kasipul by-election was called following the killing of Ong’ondo Were earlier this year in Nairobi, an incident police have described as an assassination. His death sparked shock across the constituency, with many residents linking Thursday’s vote to a broader sense of loss and transition.
Election officials reported that polling went on peacefully in most centres, with only minor delays in a few stations. Counting continued through the night before the IEBC confirmed the outcome.

As the returning officer handed Boyd his certificate, ODM supporters erupted into celebrations, describing the victory as both political and personal for the community. Many residents said the win symbolised continuity, noting that Boyd had campaigned on a message of honouring his father’s work while promising a fresh approach to constituency development.
“This is a win for Kasipul, and we are happy residents. This is the leadership we needed to develop our constituency.” A Kasipul resident told Dawan on the phone.
The by-election drew significant attention across the country, with observers noting a strong voter turnout despite recent tensions in other parts of the country where multiple by-elections were taking place.
With his victory confirmed, Boyd Were is expected to be sworn in once Parliament completes the formal admission process. He will now take up the role his father occupied until his tragic death, stepping into what many say will be a deeply scrutinised but meaningful chapter for Kasipul.
