Somalia, 25 October 2025 — The Puntland State of Somalia has declared that it will not accept any attempt to remove or undermine the constitutional and legal frameworks forming the foundation of Somalia’s federal system, issuing a firm warning against a potential power vacuum.
Speaking in Garowe during the opening of the 57th session of the Puntland House of Representatives, President Said Abdullahi Deni warned that Puntland will not stand idle if Somalia were to slide into a constitutional or leadership crisis.
“The Puntland Government will never accept the removal of the laws and agreements that underpin the Federal Republic of Somalia, foremost among them the Provisional Constitution. Puntland will not stand by if the country enters a constitutional or leadership void,” President Deni said.
President Deni also reaffirmed Puntland’s full support for the National Future Council of Somalia, a new political platform announced recently in Nairobi, comprising members of the opposition and leaders from Puntland and Jubaland. He said the Council should assume responsibility for protecting and safeguarding the nation’s future.
“We call on all stakeholders in Somalia’s future to stand together to help the country overcome political confusion and insecurity,” he added.
Puntland’s declaration comes amid ongoing tension with the Federal Government of Somalia, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. Puntland has been a long-standing opponent to the FGS’s recent amendments to the Provisional Constitution, a key point of political and governance disputes that have marked their relationship over the past years.
