Djibouti(Mogadishu24)he Republic of Djibouti, currently holding the chair position of IGAD, has on Wednesday welcomed the mediation effort between the two warring parties, with a focus on bringing peace and stability to Sudan and the broader region.
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Saudi Arabia, the United States, and the African Union have convened a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, aimed at discussing the ongoing conflict and mediating between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
In a statement, Djibouti’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed that the parties have committed to mutual understanding to put an end to the conflict.
“The Republic of Djibouti, currently holding the Presidency of IGAD, welcomes the mediation initiative between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces that took place in Jeddah,” the statement reads.
It added, “The parties have made decisive commitments for humanitarian aid and mutual trust, demonstrating their willingness to end the conflict.”
The Republic of Djibouti commended the vital role played by the mediators: Saudi Arabia, the United States, the African Union, and IGAD represented by the Executive Secretary Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu.
“Djibouti congratulates the mediators—Saudi Arabia, the United States, the African Union, and IGAD represented by its Executive Secretary—for their role in these negotiations and encourages the respect of commitments for the well-being of the Sudanese people,” said the statement.
Sudan has been gripped by violent conflicts that erupted on April 15, 2023, which started from a disagreement and armed clashes between the Sudanese Army and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The escalating conflicts have led to a significant loss of life, with thousands of Sudanese killed and numerous families forcibly displaced.
The government of Djibouti has reaffirmed its commitment to actively engage in addressing the Sudanese crisis and fostering sustainable peace and stability in the region, calling on the mediation partners and neighboring countries to strengthen their humanitarian efforts for the people of Sudan.
