Djibouti(Mogadishu24)-In a significant diplomatic move, the President of Djibouti, Ismail Omar Guelleh, in his capacity as the Acting President of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), hosted a meeting with Dr. Mohamed Ibn Shambas, President of the High Panel of the African Union for Sudan aiming to foster peace in Sudan
Dr. Shambas's visit to Djibouti is part of a broader mission to engage with regional leaders on the African Union's peace strategy for Sudan. The discussions with President Guelleh focused on enhancing coordination across regional, continental, and international efforts to achieve peace in the conflict-ridden nation.
A key outcome of the talks was a mutual agreement on the importance of urging Sudanese factions to observe a truce during the upcoming month of Ramadan. This ceasefire is hoped to serve as a foundation for a permanent cessation of hostilities and the beginning of political negotiations aimed at reinstating a civilian-led government in Sudan.
The meeting also highlighted the necessity of an integrated approach to advocacy among Sudan's warring parties, promoting an extension of the Ramadan ceasefire into a lasting peace agreement.
In attendance were notable figures including Mrs. Speciosa Wandira-Kazibwe, former Vice President of Uganda, and members of the African Union High Panel for Sudan. Djibouti's representation included Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Ambassador to Sudan Issa Kaireh Robleh, and the President's Diplomatic Counselor, Mrs. Fathia Djama Oudune, emphasizing the country's commitment to the peace process.
