Egypt, 29 December 2025 Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty on Monday called for an emergency session of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council in response to Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
Speaking during a virtual meeting of the AU ministers, Abdel Atty condemned Israel’s move, describing it as a blatant violation of international law, the UN Charter, and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
He emphasized that the recognition undermines the foundations of peace and security in the region and globally, particularly in the Horn of Africa, and poses a threat to the region’s stability.
Abdel Atty urged the AU to act swiftly on the matter to reaffirm Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, while rejecting unilateral actions that threaten peace and stability in the region.

The call came after the Arab League also expressed its concerns, urging the UN Security Council to take a firm stance on Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
Somalia has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to its sovereignty and national unity.
