Egypt Seeks UN Action Over Ethiopia's Dam, Warns of Regional Threat

Cairo(Mogadishu24)-The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has formally addressed a letter to the President of the United Nations Security Council concerning recent developments related to the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD). The letter, delivered by Egypt's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, on September 1, 2024, follows Ethiopia's recent actions concerning the filling of the dam, which Egypt has consistently opposed due to its potential impact on Nile water distribution.

The statement issued by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry strongly condemns Ethiopia's unilateral actions, which Egypt argues are in violation of international law and threaten regional stability. Egypt reaffirmed its rejection of Ethiopia’s approach to managing the dam's operations without reaching a legally binding agreement with the downstream countries, Egypt and Sudan.

Egypt has called upon the international community to intervene and support efforts to reach a fair and balanced agreement that ensures the equitable use of Nile waters and prevents further escalation of tensions in the region. The Foreign Ministry's statement emphasized the importance of dialogue and cooperation to resolve the dispute and safeguard the interests of all Nile Basin countries.
