Eritrea, 13 January 2026 President Isaias Afwerki has attributed global instability to the shift from a unipolar to a multipolar world order, highlighting the need for a more equitable international system.
In an interview with local media on Monday, President Afwerki noted that the increasing complexity of the global landscape underscores the urgent need for a more just and equitable international order founded on principles of mutual respect and equal partnership among states. Such a framework, he argued, represents the only sustainable path to lasting global stability, free from all forms of systemic exploitation..
Commenting on relations with the United States, President Afwerki reiterated Eritrea’s commitment to constructive and principled engagement with Washington, despite challenges that have marked ties with successive U.S. administrations.

He recalled that Eritrea’s initiative during former President Donald Trump’s first term was met with a positive response and led to consultations, although tangible progress remained limited and subsequently declined during the administration of President Joe Biden.
The President further noted that Eritrea renewed its outreach in 2025 and received a positive response from President Trump. While cautioning that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions, he emphasized that the dialogue remains ongoing.
He reaffirmed Eritrea’s willingness to cooperate with the United States on issues of shared interest, particularly in advancing peace, stability, and development in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
