Ethiopia, 28 January 2026 - Ethiopia and the United States marked 120 years of diplomatic relations with high‑level discussions between Ethiopian and U.S. officials, underscoring deepening cooperation on bilateral priorities and shared regional interests.
The engagement comes at a moment of reinforced dialogue between Addis Ababa and Washington as both countries navigate evolving geopolitical and development agendas in the Horn of Africa and beyond.
On 28 January 2026, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos hosted U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau for bilateral talks that covered a range of strategic issues, including expanding cooperation across trade, security, development and diplomatic collaboration.
Both sides reaffirmed their mutual commitment to strengthening ties rooted in a long history of engagement that dates back to the early 20th century.
The discussions explored how immediate and long‑term cooperation could be expanded, particularly in areas such as economic partnerships, governance reforms, regional peace and security in the Horn of Africa.
The talks also reflected a recognition that long‑standing ties create opportunities for Ethiopia and the United States to collaborate on shared challenges, from economic competitiveness to inclusive growth and institutional capacity building.
Both delegations highlighted the symbolic and practical importance of the milestone anniversary.
