Ethiopia, 31 January 2026 Ethiopia inaugurated the first phase of the Shabeely Tourism Center on Saturday, a major cultural and economic development project in the Somali Region.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Djibouti President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, Somali Region President Mustafa Mohammed Omar and other officials and dignitaries.
The project, costing approximately 8 billion birr ($155 million), is designed to reflect Somali cultural heritage, particularly the traditions of local pastoralist communities. It is intended not only as a tourism destination but also as a hub for preserving and promoting Somali culture.
“Shabeely is not only a resort, but also a living expression of the rich heritage of the Somali Region, seamlessly blending modern architecture with ancient traditions,” Prime Minister Abiy said in a statement posted on social media.

“This project, among many others, marks a significant milestone in fulfilling our promise to make Ethiopia one of Africa’s top tourist destinations,” the PM added.
Officials say the centre will contribute to local economic development, create jobs, and attract investment to the region. Shabeeley, recently designated as a municipal administration, is expected to grow rapidly with the establishment of the centre, which is part of the broader "Dine for Generations" initiative spanning 385 hectares.
The development represents a strategic effort to integrate previously underrepresented regions into Ethiopia’s national growth agenda, providing both cultural visibility and economic opportunities.
