Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-The President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Sunday appointed Ali Jeyte, the former Governor of Hiiraan, as the Chief Liaison in the Office of the President.
Somalia's Minister of Information, Daud Aweis, announced that Ali Jeyte will lead the Civilian Defense Forces, known as 'Macawisley,' in the fight against Al-Shabaab.
The appointment of Ali Jeyte for this role will have an important impact in the ongoing battle against Al-Shabaab, and strengthen the government’s efforts against the insurgent group.
Ali Jeyte Osman was removed from his position as the Governor of the Hiiraan region by the state president of Hirshabelle in June this year. The removal followed disagreements between the two leaders, primarily rooted from tax-related disputes.
Ali Jeyte, the former Governor, is recognized for his vital role in the fight against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group, where he mobilized the 'Macawisley' Defense Forces.
His dismissal sparked criticism from parliamentarians and security experts who consider him a crucial player in the battle against Al-Shabaab.
The disputes between the Hirshabelle president and Governor Ali Jeyte halted the fight against Al-Shabaab due to lack of coordination between the troops allied to the leaders.
Last month, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited the Mahaas district in Hiiraan region where he engaged with politicians, intellectuals, and traditional elders, including Ali Jeyte. They reached an agreement to resolve disputes through dialogue and accelerate efforts against Al-Shabaab forces.
Ali Jeyte Osman has previously served as the Governor of the Hiiraan region and as a Member of the Parliament of the Republic of Somalia.
The federal government of Somalia has intensified its fight against Al-Shabaab, strengthening its efforts by mobilising the frontline forces and communities living in Al-Shabaab controlled areas.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud declared total war against the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization after his re-election in May 2022. Since then, the Somali National Army and the Macawisley Forces, supported by international partners, have liberated over 120 new locations.
