Mogadishu(Mogadishu24)-Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has voiced criticism of the Federal Government's push for one-person, one-vote elections, questioning its feasibility given Somalia’s current security and political landscape.
Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, Sharif raised concerns about gathering large groups for polling in a secure environment, questioning the logistical and security readiness for such an election.
"We are in Mogadishu now, but is it possible to safely gather 1,000 or 2,000 people to cast their votes, count, and announce results?” Sharif asked, suggesting that practical considerations are vital for ensuring public confidence in any election process.
He added that while everyone supports a one-person, one-vote election model to enhance Somalia's democratic image, effective implementation requires comprehensive groundwork and inclusivity among all stakeholders.
Sharif condemned today's deadly incident involving Somali government forces, sending condolences to affected families and wishing a speedy recovery to those injured.
He accused the government of engaging in "land robbery" and criticized the current administration's approach to land issues in Mogadishu.
Sharif’s remarks came shortly after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud addressed the parliament, urging members to accelerate constitutional reforms and electoral preparations.
As leader of the Himilo Qaran party, Sharif highlighted growing concerns over the government’s election strategies, pointing out a loss of confidence from key regions such as Puntland, Jubaland, and Somaliland.
