Kenya, 6 December 2025 - Kenya Red Cross’s Garissa branch has been named this year’s ‘Branch of the Year’ as the agency marked 60 years of service.
According to Garissa County coordinator Daud Ahmed Shale, the branch earned the award for its leading role in emergency and disaster response, and for its continued engagement and strategic partnerships with both government and non-government entities.
He added that it is the only branch that launched the Kenya Red Cross celebration @60, and has continued to improve its infrastructure including building six VIP washrooms and planting trees and flowers within its Garissa office compound.
“This is a very proud moment for us at Kenya Red Cross in Garissa. This award would not have been possible were it not for dedicated volunteers and board members,” Daud told Dawan Africa on Saturday.
The branch was also praised for increasing its registration of new life memberships. In March alone, they managed to bring in 60 new members.

Another key reason for the recognition was the branch’s ability to work closely with both national and county governments, and its signing of strategic partnerships with institutions such as Garissa University.
The award was presented during the celebration of the agency’s six decades of service at the Boma Hotel in Nairobi, the Kenya Red Cross headquarters, where Secretary General Ahmed Idris was in attendance alongside the National Executive Committee, diplomats, governors, and other partners.
Garissa Red Cross has long been involved in disaster response in the region, including inter-ethnic skirmishes, terrorism attacks, disease outbreaks, fires, and road accidents.
In 2024, Garissa residents acknowledged the agency’s work during the flash floods at Kona Punda that claimed the lives of 13 people.
