Somalia, 19 November 2025 — The Hiraan Regional Administration announced on Tuesday a general ban on carrying of illegal weapons within the city, following an increase in insecurity and the recent killings of young people in the recent past.
The Governor of Hiraan Region, Mohamed Hussein Mohamed, said in a press conference that the decision was taken after a meeting with security agencies, during which they agreed to strengthen measures aimed at combating armed criminals carrying unauthorized weapons.
“Anyone carrying an illegal firearm within the city must be apprehended. If that person resists, legal action will be taken against them, and we as the administration will take full responsibility for any consequences,” the governor said.
The governor also issued strong criticism toward some traditional elders, accusing them of obstructing law enforcement whenever security incidents occur.

“One of the biggest problems is some of the elders, who intervene when someone is killed, attempting to prevent suspects from being taken to the police station. This must stop,” he said.
The administration stated that the new directive is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the city, which has recently experienced a series of incidents blamed on armed gangs and drug trafficking.
The announcement comes after several consecutive nights in which youth killings were reported in the city, raising public concern over local security.
