Kenya, 25 January 2026 - Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has warned President William Ruto that the country would be pushed into crisis if any harm befalls former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, following a violent incident at Witima ACK Church in Othaya.
“If anything happens to Rigathi Gachagua, William Ruto, you will not have a country — beginning with yourself,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo was speaking at AIC Mwatungo Church in Machakos.
Kalonzo, who is the Wiper Party leader and a co-principal of the United Opposition, issued the warning as he strongly condemned what he described as a violent and unlawful attack at the church, where Gachagua, his team and unarmed civilians were reportedly trapped as live bullets and tear gas were fired outside and vehicles torched.
He described the incident as a grave violation of the Constitution and the rule of law, saying the use of force against civilians in a place of worship was indefensible.
“A church is a sacred and protected space. The use of force against unarmed citizens in such circumstances is unlawful and indefensible,” Kalonzo said.
The opposition leader said the incident had caused deep distress to Gachagua’s family, particularly his wife, Dorcas Gachagua, and warned that Kenya was veering away from the democratic ideals it had worked to build.
“You can imagine what Gachagua’s wife, Dorcas, is going through. This is not the country we have been building, brick by brick, founded on good governance, democracy and respect among the community of nations,” he said.
Kalonzo held the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja personally responsible for the safety of Gachagua, his team and civilians caught up in the standoff.

“I hold the Inspector General of Police and all those responsible fully accountable. No political ambition or rivalry can ever justify terrorizing citizens or attacking a place of worship,” he said.
He further called on international partners to take action against President Ruto, accusing his administration of presiding over repression and political violence.
“I now call upon all our international partners to declare William Ruto a pariah Head of State,” Kalonzo said.
Kalonzo concluded by warning that the country was at a dangerous turning point.
“Kenya must remain a constitutional democracy governed by law — not violence, fear or impunity.”
