Kenya, 23 October 2025 - The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rainfall advisory, warning residents of several parts of the country to stay alert and take safety measures because of expected flash floods, and landslides.
In its seven-day forecast (23 October 2025, to 30 October 2025), the MET stated that rainfall currently pounding parts of the Lake Victoria, the Rift Valley, and Highlands West of Rift Valley will intensify to more than 30mm in 24 hours and spread to Highlands East of Rift Valley including the capital, Nairobi and parts of Southeastern lowlands today Thursday.
"The heavy rainfall is expected to continue and extend to parts of Northeast from Thursday, 30 October 2025," said Kennedy Thiong'o, an official from the MET department in the advisory released to newsrooms.
The weatherman specifically warned residents of 39 counties to be on high alert. These counties are Kisumu, Homa Bay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, and Bomet as well as Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, and West Pokot.
Others are Turkana, Isiolo, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, and Kirinyaga.
Also included in the advisory are Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Nairobi, and parts of Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni.
Even in parts of counties mentioned which would not have received heavy downpour, especially downstream, residents may experience flood waters.
As a precautionary measure, people in the affected areas have been advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water, open fields, and not to shelter under trees and grilled windows to minimise exposure to lightening strikes.
People in hilly areas which are landslide prone, such as slopes of Aberdare ranges, Mt Kenya and sloppy areas over the western region have been advised to be on high alert.
The MET stated that the rains within this period likely mark the onset of Short Rains Season (OND) over several parts of the country except over parts of Southeastern lowlands and the coastal region as indicated in the OND 2025 Forecast.
