Kenya 12, November 2025- Kenya’s government has confirmed that eight Kenyans who were arrested in Tanzania following post-election unrest have been released, while three others remain in custody. However, the body of a Kenyan teacher killed during the chaos is still missing.
Speaking during his quarterly media briefing on Wednesday, Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi said the Kenyan government is closely monitoring the situation in Tanzania after the country’s disputed October 29 elections.
Mudavadi confirmed that John Ogutu, a teacher at Sky Schools in Dar es Salaam, was shot dead at Goba Centre in Ubungo District during the unrest. “The body of Ogutu has not been traced to date,” he said. “We are engaging the Tanzanian authorities through our High Commission in Dar es Salaam to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and to ensure justice for his family.”
According to Mudavadi, the eight released Kenyans were arrested in different parts of Tanzania in the days following the election, while two remain detained in Arusha and one in Dar es Salaam. He said Nairobi is offering consular assistance to all affected citizens, including support for those seeking to return home.

“The safety and welfare of Kenyans abroad remain a priority for our ministry,” Mudavadi stated. “We are following up on every individual case to ensure their rights are respected.”
The Kenyan government also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining strong ties with Tanzania, despite the tensions that followed the elections. Mudavadi said Kenya recognizes President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration and remains committed to cooperation under the East African Community framework.
Meanwhile, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has called for investigations into the killings and human rights violations linked to Tanzania’s elections. The UN said reports from various sources suggest that hundreds of people may have been killed, while others remain missing or detained. Türk urged Tanzanian authorities to reveal the whereabouts of the missing and allow families to bury their loved ones with dignity.
