17 January 2026 - Former Garissa Governor Ali Bunow Korane on Saturday vowed to return all dismissed county employees to payroll if re-elected for gubernatorial seat.
Speaking in various stop overs within Garissa Township the former Governor said all employees sacked by the current Governor Nathif Jama’s administration will be returned without any conditions.
In 2022, when Governor Jama was re-elected for the second term, he dismissed close to 3,000 employees without any notice, the employees have however sued the county over illegal dismissal.
“All those who were sacked will be returned to their jobs, all of them without considering where they come from in the county,” he told supporters.
The former Governor at the same time promised to give out cash that he said is not loan and residents will not be required to return.
During his term, between 2017 to 2022, Korane had launched a revolving fund that at the time he said was to help the community develop but it didn’t materialize, this time the former Governor said his administration will work on his promises to his electorate.
Korane noted that unlike other past elections, he has confidence that he has support at the grassroots adding that even places like Dadaab and Lagdera where he never used to get votes he has support.
“Today I solely came to greet you and inform you that I’m fully in the race for gubernatorial election, I’m happy how you came in large numbers,” he told his supporters while atop his car.

Tomorrow Sunday, another gubernatorial contender Mohamed Shidiye is expected to submit his credentials to Aulihan Council of elders who are expected to give him greenlight for upcoming general elections.
Shidiye has been making inroads in his backyard in second term bid after the first was prevailed upon by elders to step down in favour of current Governor Nathif Jama.
In Northeastern, politics is characterized with clans arrangement with parties having little influence on the voters, unlike other past elections, this time, three Ogaden sub-clans have their eyes set for gubernatorial seat.
Garissa senator Abdul Haji and former Ijara member of parliament Ahmed Ibrahim Abass from samawathal clan have also declared their bid to succeed Jama.
In the coming days, heightened political gatherings are expected with clans making coalitions ahead of 2027 general elections.
