Somalia, 16 December 2025 - The Board of Directors of the African Development Fund has approved a total grant of $23.36 million to provide reliable, clean energy in Bosaso.
The funding, provided by the African Development Fund ($9.62 million) and the Transition Support Facility ($13.74 million), will be used for the maintenance and expansion of Bosaso's electrical grid and strengthening energy institutions to generate clean energy.
The project will include the generation of solar energy, expanding the distribution network, and installing modern equipment to help the community manage energy usage efficiently. It will also bring solar power systems to households that previously had no electricity, including internally displaced persons living in challenging conditions.
A press release from the Fund said Somalia is among the countries with the lowest access to electricity in the world. Approximately half of the population lives in areas without electricity, often forced to pay high prices, as most electricity is generated from fuel.

"This project will transform the daily lives of families and small businesses in Bosaso. It will make electricity affordable, clean, and reliable, and it is a significant step toward a resilient and sustainable energy future," said Sankareh.
The project is expected to reduce electricity costs for the local population and help businesses operate more efficiently.
