Kenya, January 4 2026 -Morocco reached the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after a narrow 1-0 victory over Tanzania in the round of 16 on Sunday, with Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz scoring the decisive second-half goal to send the hosts through to the next stage of the tournament.
The win keeps Morocco’s hopes alive of winning their first continental title on home soil.
The match in Rabat was tense and closely contested, with both teams showing defensive resilience in the opening stages. Morocco largely dominated possession and created more opportunities, yet they found it difficult to break down a well-organised Tanzanian defence.
Despite the pressure, clear chances were limited in the first half as both sides struggled to gain a foothold in the game.
The breakthrough came early in the second half when Morocco stepped up their attacking intent. Brahim Díaz, who has been one of the standout performers of the tournament, finally found the back of the net with a well-taken strike in the 64th minute.

Tanzania pressed for an equaliser after going behind, and they enjoyed a few opportunities to level the score as Morocco had to defend with determination late in the game. Ultimately, the Atlas Lions held firm to secure the 1-0 victory and book their place in the last eight.
The goal was Díaz’s fourth of the tournament, making him one of the leading scorers at AFCON so far and underlining his importance to the Moroccan side both creatively and in front of goal. His performance continues to draw praise as he plays a key role in Morocco’s bid for continental glory.
Morocco will now await the winner of the South Africa vs Cameroon match to learn their quarter-final opponent as they continue their campaign with confidence and ambition
