Motorists using Ngong Road are set to experience night traffic diversions for 23 days this month as the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) continues construction of a new flyover near the Junction Mall area.
The authority announced on Thursday, November 6, 2025, that the temporary traffic changes will take effect from Tuesday, November 18 to Wednesday, December 10, 2025. The roadworks will be carried out between 8:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. daily, except on Sundays, to minimise disruption during peak daytime hours.
According to KURA, the partial night closures will allow engineers to install a steel structure forming part of the new flyover , a key element of ongoing efforts to ease traffic congestion along Ngong Road, one of Nairobi’s busiest transport corridors.
The flyover, which is under construction near the Junction Mall, is expected to significantly improve traffic flow in the area once completed. The section is notorious for long traffic jams, particularly during rush hours, as it connects Nairobi’s central business district to key residential areas such as Dagoretti, Karen, and Ngong.
During the construction period, KURA has announced a temporary diversion between the Nairobi City County Training School and the Kenya Science Campus. The detour will allow two-way movement within the affected stretch, helping to maintain traffic flow even as work progresses on the main carriageway.
“Motorists are advised to approach the area cautiously and follow the instructions of traffic police and marshals who will be deployed on site to guide movement,” KURA said in a statement. “We also encourage drivers to plan their journeys early and consider alternative routes whenever possible.”
The agency assured the public that its engineers and contractors will work strictly within the scheduled timeline to minimise inconvenience and ensure safety during the works.
The Ngong Road flyover project is part of KURA’s wider initiative to modernise Nairobi’s road network and reduce chronic congestion in key traffic zones. The authority noted that once the flyover is completed, it will not only enhance movement for motorists but also improve pedestrian safety and accessibility in the area.
KURA has been undertaking a series of road improvement projects across Nairobi, including road widening, signal upgrades, and drainage improvements, aimed at making city travel safer and more efficient.
The announcement by KURA follows a related advisory issued by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) in October. KeNHA is currently implementing night construction works along the Thika Superhighway at Kihunguro, where traffic flow has been adjusted from October 20 to December 20, 2025.
That project involves the construction of column bases and stub columns for a new pedestrian footbridge designed to enhance safety for thousands of pedestrians who cross the highway daily.
KURA apologised for any inconvenience the disruptions may cause and appealed for public understanding, noting that such measures are necessary to complete the infrastructure safely and efficiently.
“The works are part of our long-term plan to improve Nairobi’s urban road network and create a safer, more efficient transport environment for all road users,” the statement added.
Once completed, the Ngong Road flyover is expected to significantly cut travel times, especially around the Junction Mall area, providing much-needed relief for commuters and supporting Nairobi’s growing transport demands.
