BARIIRE (Dawan Africa) – Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) says its Special Forces have targeted a house in Bariire, Lower Shabelle, where it claims senior members of the Al-Shabaab group were present, as part of a continuing military operation in the area.
“The Special Forces of the National Intelligence and Security Agency are currently executing an extensive operation in Bariire, Lower Shabelle region, targeting a house where senior members of the Al-Shabaab group are staying,” NISA said in a statement posted on social media on Friday night.
NISA said initial assessments indicate the ongoing operation has inflicted heavy casualties on Al-Shabaab, including the reported killing of senior leaders. It added that further details will be released once the operation is concluded.
The strike took place on Friday night and forms part of a wider military campaign launched in Bariire last week. NISA also released aerial photographs it said show the targeted building before and after the attack. The images have not been independently verified, and there are no confirmed reports of civilian casualties or damage to nearby structures.
Bariire is one of the most strategic towns in Lower Shabelle and has historically served as a key staging ground for Al-Shabaab, making it a recurring target in government-led counter-insurgency efforts.
