Somalia, 22 November 2025 — Somalia's President, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has instructed the Ministry of Education to urgently complete the recruitment of 10,000 teachers promised by the Federal Government, calling for the remaining appointments and training programmes to be finalised without delay.
Speaking during National Teachers’ Day celebrations in Mogadishu today, the president said 6,000 teachers are already in service and stressed that the remaining positions must be filled to strengthen the national education system and address staffing gaps in public schools.
“The Federal Government of Somalia has pledged 10,000 teachers to join the education sector. Of that number, 6,000 are already in service, and the rest must be completed urgently,” President Hassan said.
He also directed the ministry to expand teacher training across the country, ensure training centres are fully utilised, and provide free professional development opportunities for teachers.

The president noted that while 10,000 teachers may not be sufficient in the long term, the programme represents a critical step toward building a sustainable workforce.
President Hassan further emphasised the need to improve the learning environment for Somali students, saying the government remains committed to creating conditions that allow students to study in settings comparable to those in more developed education systems.
