Mogadishu, Somalia – June 12, 2025 — President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, visited the Oruç Reis Seismic Research Vessel, which has been operating off Somalia’s coast to conduct oil and gas resource surveys. The vessel’s mission was officially concluded, marking the completion of the seismic survey of Somalia’s maritime zones.
During his visit, President Mohamud praised the efforts of the Turkish team and partners involved in this strategic survey. He highlighted the importance of the survey for Somalia’s future, stating that the results would have a transformative impact on the country’s development and its bilateral relations with Turkey.
“This is a significant achievement that strengthens our goal to fully harness Somalia’s resources, transforming them into economic opportunities and social development. The government and people of Turkey have always been at the forefront, showing that Somalia is an investment-ready nation,” President Mohamud said.
The President emphasized the government's ongoing efforts to boost the country’s economy by utilizing its rich natural resources, which have the potential to address the nation’s challenges.
“The government is committed to improving the country's economy by exploiting its abundant natural resources, which can help address the challenges Somalia faces,” he added.
Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey, Alparslan Bayraktar, confirmed that the Oruç Reis will depart from Mogadishu Port on June 15, 2025, with the collected data to be returned to Turkey for analysis. This survey is part of a broader initiative aimed at assessing the energy potential of Somalia’s maritime zones, particularly focusing on oil and gas exploration.
The results from the seismic survey will play a key role in shaping future assessments and management strategies for Somalia’s maritime jurisdiction and natural resources.
