GAROWE, PUNTLAND — In a move to bolster the use of the Somali language, the Puntland State government has introduced a new policy that requires all business registrations to use Somali names. The announcement was made by Minister of Information Maxamuud Caydiid Dirir during the Mother Tongue Day celebrations in Garowe.
Strict Regulations and Penalties
Under the new rule, businesses must register and operate under Somali names to be eligible for a trade license. Those failing to comply with this regulation will face fines and may be denied the issuance or renewal of their trade licenses. Additionally, printing presses producing non-Somali signage will also be subject to penalties.
Government’s Commitment
Minister Dirir emphasized the government's dedication to the strict enforcement of this policy, aiming to preserve and promote the Somali language within the business sector. “This initiative is not just about regulation but about re-affirming the cultural and historical essence of our language in every aspect of our public and economic life,” stated Minister Dirir.
Challenges Ahead
Despite the government's strong stance, the effectiveness of this policy is yet to be seen. Previous attempts to enforce similar language policies in other regions of Somalia have faced challenges in consistent enforcement and acceptance among the business community.
