Somalia, 8 October, 2025 — Four major political parties in Puntland — IFIYE, MUSTAQBAL, MIDEEYE, and SINCAD — have jointly rejected the recent political agreement between the Puntland government and the Somaliland administration, calling it unconstitutional and harmful to Somalia’s unity.
In a joint statement issued after an emergency meeting in Garowe, on Tuesday, the parties said the deal “serves separatist agendas” and “undermines the national unity of the Somali people.” They further argued that the agreement fails to protect Puntland’s interests and contradicts both the Puntland and Federal Constitutions.
The parties also criticized the Puntland leadership for what they described as “directionless and opportunistic politics,” urging citizens not to be misled by the government’s current stance.
They called on the Puntland House of Representatives to immediately annul the agreement, and urged members of the national Council for Somalia’s Future to clarify their positions, after one of its members reportedly supported Somaliland’s right to self-determination.
The statement concluded with a reaffirmation of the parties’ commitment to safeguarding Puntland’s founding principles — particularly, the unity and integrity of the Somali nation.
The dispute stems from reports that the Puntland government reached a political understanding with Somaliland, the breakaway region seeking independence since 1991. Although details remain unclear, opposition parties in Puntland view the move as a breach of Puntland’s founding principles, which emphasize Somalia’s unity and rejection of secession.
