Somalia, 8 January 2026 President Said Abdullahi Deni held consultation meetings with Puntland's federal and state legislators to shape a unified stance on Somalia’s political situation and the federal member state's role in state-building.
The meetings held, Wednesday, in Garowe were also attended by Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugatoor and other key government officials.
According to a statement from the Puntland presidency, the agenda focused on Puntland’s current role in Somalia’s state-building process, as well as the general security and political situation in the country. Leaders also discussed the unfolding social and political developments in the wider Horn of Africa region.

Notable participants included Senator Abdirahman Faroole, former President of Puntland, and the Second Deputy Speaker of the Puntland House of Representatives, Mohamed Mahmoud Issa.
Details on the outcome of the consultations are yet to be made public. However, the administration stated that insights gathered from these meetings, along with future consultations with traditional elders, will guide the federal member state's next steps.
So far, Puntland has not released any position or statement regarding Israel’s recognition of Somaliland.
