Geneva, Switzerland(Mogadishu24)-Somali Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Ali Adam Abubakar, on Friday expressed deep gratitude following the passage of a pivotal resolution at the 77th World Health Assembly. The resolution, proposed by Somalia, aimed to accelerate progress towards reducing maternal, newborn, and child mortality, garnering widespread support from member states.
The resolution calls on member states to take concrete steps to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets 3.1 and 3.2. SDG 3.1 aims to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 100,000 live births, while SDG 3.2 seeks to end preventable deaths of newborns and children under 5 years of age.
“We are truly appreciative of the support shown by our fellow member states in passing this critical resolution,” stated Dr. Ali Adam. “Maternal, newborn, and child health are among our highest priorities in Somalia, and this commitment from the global community will help us save many lives in the years to come.”
Dr. Adam also expressed gratitude to the countries that sponsored the resolution, praising their leadership in championing this vital issue on the global stage.
“With renewed focus and resources, we are confident that we can make significant strides towards meeting the SDG targets and ensuring a healthier future for all Somali women and children,” he concluded.
The passage of this resolution marks a significant step forward in global efforts to improve maternal and child health, with Somalia playing a key role in driving these critical initiatives.
