The Somali Parliament’s session scheduled for June 16, 2025, was officially postponed due to the absence of the required quorum, with only 87 MPs in attendance. The announcement was made by the Second Speaker of the Parliament, Abdullahi Omar Abshir-Abshirow, who confirmed that the session could not proceed due to the insufficient number of lawmakers present.
In his statement, Speaker Abshir-Abshirow mentioned that the MPs had been informed a week earlier that the parliament was scheduled to reconvene on June 16, with the intention of moving forward with legislative matters. However, as he clarified, the agenda, which included the swearing-in of new MPs and the discussion of pending legislation, could not be carried out.
“The planned agenda for today’s session, including the swearing-in of new members and consideration of several important bills, could not be achieved,” Speaker Abshir-Abshirow stated.
The session's delay marks another instance of the recurring challenges in the Somali Parliament where lack of quorum has disrupted legislative proceedings.
The parliamentary session was expected to be the first meeting after the Eid holidays and Hajj pilgrimage, but the absence of lawmakers prevented it from being convened. This is not the first time that a lack of quorum has disrupted parliamentary sessions, highlighting an ongoing issue that continues to affect the operations of the Somali Parliament.
