Somalia, 3 January 2025 Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has strongly condemned remarks attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump in which he reportedly described Somali migrants as “garbage,” saying the language is unacceptable and contrary to basic human values.
In an interview with Al Arabiya English on Saturday, Mohamud said he does not agree with the reported comments and emphasized that no group of people should be described in such negative terms.
“This is not acceptable at all,” Mohamud said, adding that Somalis are “intelligent, hardworking, honest and decent people” and should not be characterized in such a way. He suggested the remarks may have been misplaced.

The president also addressed Somali migration to the United States, noting that decisions on immigration enforcement fall under the authority of U.S. agencies. He said Somalis who are legally resident in the country should be allowed to remain, while cases involving undocumented migrants should be handled in accordance with U.S. law and due process.
Mohamud added that he hopes all individuals affected by U.S. immigration decisions are treated fairly and transparently under the legal system.
