Rome, Italy(Mogadishu24)-The President of the Federal Government of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, made a compelling call for collective action and innovative financial strategies to achieve sustainable food security and combat hunger. He delivered this message during the UN Food Systems Summit in Roma, Italy on Tuesday.
President Mohamud highlighted the pressing urgency of addressing the global food and hunger crises, particularly in light of the severe impact of climate change on Somalia and other Sub-Saharan countries.
To tackle these challenges, the President emphasized the importance of enhancing local food production, reducing losses during poor harvests, and fortifying food supply chains. As an example of positive steps, he mentioned how the Somali Government has initiated efforts to revitalize its productive sectors.
"The reality we see today in Somalia is that we have restarted revitalizing our productive sector, including livestock, agriculture, and fisheries for the maritime blue economy," the President said.
Furthermore, he highlighted the collaborative efforts of the Somali Government with humanitarian actors in averting famine and re-establishing the Somali Disaster Management Agency (SODMA). Through these measures, the government aims to extend production improvements to rural areas and ensure food security.
"A year ago, half of the Somali population was at risk of famine. Now, they are not. We are reorganizing and starting cooperatives within rural communities in agriculture, livestock, and maritime resources," he added.
Highlighting the need for comprehensive approaches, the President stressed the significance of multisectoral policies, a supportive regulatory framework, and infrastructural development to foster resilient food systems. He also reiterated his government's commitment to attracting foreign direct investment, aiding displaced individuals, and promoting rural development.
In recent times, Somalia has demonstrated its dedication to enhancing regional progress by actively involving high-ranking government officials in multiple summits and meetings aimed at addressing both domestic and regional concerns. Somali leaders, including ministers, have embarked on diplomatic visits to neighboring nations such as Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Uganda. These interactions have been instrumental in fostering mutual interests, establishing connections, and strengthening ties between the countries involved.
