Jigjiga (Dawan Africa) – The Somali Regional State (SRS) has launched construction on the long-awaited Qubi Bridge across the Erer River, a $5.4 million infrastructure project aimed at boosting regional connectivity and economic integration.
The project, officially launched on Saturday, July 5, 2025, is financed by the regional government with an estimated completion timeline of 18 months. The 300 million Ethiopian Birr initiative was inaugurated by Hussein Hashi Qassim, Minister in the Office of the President, alongside senior officials from the Irrigation Development Office and the Ministries of Creation and Technology, as well as local leaders from Erer and Qubi.
Speaking to the media, Mohamed Fatah Mohamed, Minister of Irrigation Development, emphasized that the bridge will respond to long-standing community demands. “The people of Qubbi have been isolated for too long. This bridge will help connect them and enhance social and economic activity in the area,” he said.
Following the inauguration, the delegation traveled to Qubi district, where they met with local residents. Minister Qassim assured the public that the government is fully committed to completing the bridge and eliminating the connectivity barrier that has hindered development in the region.
The Qubi Bridge is expected to significantly improve transportation and trade routes, benefiting not only Qubbi district but also the surrounding communities that rely on access to broader regional markets.
