Ethiopia,15 September 2025 - The Somali Regional State Education Office announced on Sunday that fewer than 500 students passed the 12th-grade exams out of more than 16,000 candidates.
In percentage terms, only 3 percent of students passed the exams, However, the number represented a 76 percent increase compared to last year’s performance.
According to the Education Office, in 2016 (Ethiopian Calendar), 22,683 students took the exam, and only 263 passed, representing 1.2 percent. In 2017, 462 students (3 percent) passed out of 16,779 who sat for the exam, an increase of 76 percent compared to the previous year.
The regional government in Jigijiga has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to improving the quality of education and raising the pass rate for national exams in Ethiopia.
