Somalia, 26 January 2026 Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Monday launched the construction of a new federal Ministry of Finance headquarters, a project supported by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the government said.
The modern complex will replace the ministry’s aging building from 1980 and is intended to provide offices for all departments and senior officials, while improving service delivery and reducing office congestion.
“The Ministry of Finance is the backbone of Somalia’s economic development,” Barre said, praising Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh and ministry staff for their efforts to modernize revenue systems and strengthen public financial management.

The AfDB’s involvement forms part of its broader engagement in Somalia, which includes grants to strengthen public financial architecture and revenue mobilization, as well as $76.37 million recently approved for road infrastructure upgrades to boost connectivity and regional trade, the Bank said.
The new ministry headquarters is expected to incorporate modern safety, power, and environmental standards, and AfDB’s support underscores its continued role in financing Somalia’s economic infrastructure projects.
