Somalia, January 23, 2026 Somalia’s civil society organization, the Somali Non-State Actors (SONSA), on Thursday welcomed the federal government’s move to open a platform for dialogue, responding to a proposal initially put forward by the Somali Future Council during its December 2025 meeting in Kismayo.
The group said ongoing political tensions have not only stalled state-building efforts but have also opened the door to increased foreign intervention, posing a direct threat to Somalia’s sovereignty and unity.
“The recurring political disputes have cast a shadow over the future of Somali youth, forcing many to risk their lives crossing the Mediterranean in search of opportunity,” the statement said.

SONSA called for unconditional and inclusive dialogue, focused on resolving disagreements over the electoral system and completing the country’s constitution. It urged political leaders to demonstrate responsibility and compromise to ensure meaningful outcomes.
The organization further stressed that the talks should proceed without preconditions and include independent experts to help facilitate a durable settlement between the federal government and regional leaders.
The statement concluded with a call for traditional elders and religious scholars to play a constructive role in promoting national unity and ensuring that political leaders place the public interest above partisan rivalries.
