Somalia, 29 November 2025 — Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has announced that local council elections for the Banadir region will now take place on December 25, 2025, marking the third postponement of the poll.
Commission Chairman Abdikariin Ahmed Hassan, speaking at a press briefing at the commission’s headquarters in Mogadishu today, said the commission had initially planned to hold the vote on November 30, but political associations filed formal appeals requesting additional time to prepare for participation.
He said the commission reviewed the complaints and agreed to adjust the timetable.
“We have agreed within the National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission that December 25th will be the day when the residents of Mogadishu go to vote in the municipal council elections, which will take place in 16 districts,” Hassan said.

According to the commission, 61 political associations are registered to contest the elections across the 16 districts of the Banadir region.
The election has already faced multiple postponements. Earlier schedules had set the vote for September 30, then October 30, before it was moved to November 30 and now to December 25.
Hassan urged Mogadishu residents to collect their official voter cards ahead of the poll.
