Somalia, 13 October 2025 — The Imam Al-Nawawi School in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, held a vibrant celebration on Sunday to mark Somalia’s National Flag Day.
This day is commemorated annually on October 12, to honour the year 1954 when Somalia’s flag officially became the national emblem.
The ceremony, attended by teachers, students, and parents, featured patriotic songs, poems, and speeches that honoured the Somali flag — a symbol of unity that has remained unchanged since independence. Photos from the event showcased a strong sense of patriotism and national pride among the students.
The school administration emphasized that the purpose of the celebration was to instil in the younger generation the value of the national flag and the importance of preserving Somalia’s unity and sovereignty.
The Somali flag was designed by Mohamed Awale Liban in 1954, featuring a sky-blue background with a white five-pointed star symbolizing the unity of the Somali people.
