Somalia, 26 December 2025 - The leaders of Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya are set to meet in Nairobi on Sunday for a trilateral meeting expected to focus on political and security issues critical to the region, although the official agenda has not been disclosed.
The three leaders are facing upcoming presidential elections in their respective countries, which further heightens the importance of the meeting.
According to informed sources, the discussions are expected to touch on the electoral situation in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya, and the potential impact these elections could have on the overall stability of the region.
The situation in Jubaland and the relationship between the regional state and the central government of Somalia are also anticipated to be key topics on the table.
This meeting comes after a recent cancellation of a meeting planned by the Somali opposition in Nairobi, for reasons that have not been clearly stated. Instead, the opposition chose to hold their discussions in Kismayo, where they finalized the formation of the Future of Somalia Council, which brings together Jubaland, and Puntland States leaders and key opposition politicians.
More from Somalia
Relations between Jubaland and the central government have deteriorated since 2024, following a dispute over the electoral process. The elections were however held and Ahmed Mohamed Islam ‘Madobe’ was re-elected as president, with Villa Somalia openly opposing the outcome.
The upcoming elections in the three countries are expected to take place in 2026 for Somalia and Ethiopia, while Kenya’s is scheduled for 2027.
The Nairobi meeting is seen as a reflection of the political connectivity between the three leaders and their efforts to align their visions regarding elections, security, and stability in the Horn of Africa.
