Somalia, 2 February 2026 Somalia’s government today launched the National Defense Committee to strengthen security operations and guide military reforms as local forces assume responsibility from international partners.
The launche, held in Mogadishu, was presided over by Defence Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi and attended by international partners.
The committee is tasked with strengthening defence management, coordinating security agencies, and unifying military operations and reforming the country's armed forces.
In his speech, Fiqi said the committee will serve as a central point for unifying operational goals, restructuring security agencies, and making national-level leadership decisions.

The Minister added that the committee will work to ensure the existence of an integrated and efficient defence system, aligning with the national strategy.
Fiqi stressed the importance of developing Somalia's military capacity, underlining that crucial security goals can only be achieved through a professional military force with operational and financial capabilities.
He thanked the international community for its continued support for Somalia’s military, confirming that the federal government is systematically assuming full responsibility for the country’s security.
The meeting was also attended by the Minister of Interior and Federal Affairs, Ali Yusuf Ali Hosh, Minister of Internal Security, Abdullahi Sheikh Ismail Fartaag, State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Balcad and military commanders.
