Somalia, 30 November 2025 – Somalia’s Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy has launched a Fisheries Information Management System (FIMS) to help protect the county's marine resources and promote sustainable fishing.
Under the World Bank-funded BADMAAL project the new system aims to collect and unify fisheries data across federal and state levels, improve monitoring of fishing activities, and support evidence-based decision-making.
It will help authorities track marine resources more accurately, strengthen governance, and guide sustainable management of Somalia’s 3,333-kilometre coastline.
Minister Ahmed Hassan Aden said the project is critical for protecting marine resources and restoring Somali-led management.
“The Federal Government of Somalia has prioritised reviving this project because it safeguards Somali assets and will leave a lasting foundation for Somali-led management of our resources,” he said.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was selected to implement the project due to its long-standing technical expertise and historical role in supporting fisheries data in Somalia.
The BADMAAL project, funded with $55 million from the World Bank and PROBLUE Multi Donor Trust Fund, also focuses on capacity building, small-scale fisheries infrastructure, and co-management of resources, with at least 25 per cent of beneficiaries being women.
