Somalia, 29 September 2025 – President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has underlined that the creation of the new North-East Federal Member State does not encourage separation but reinforces Somalia’s federal unity.
In his speech at the opening of Parliament’s 7th session today, the President praised the communities of the North-East for forming their administration through reconciliation and compromise:
“I extend congratulations and commendation to the Somali people of the North-East, who have succeeded in establishing a Federal Member State born out of their will, reconciliation, and compromise,” he said.
He urged the new state’s leaders to focus on securing peace, rebuilding trust with neighbors, and ensuring basic public services reach local communities:
“I call on this new administration to prioritize ensuring security, strengthening reconciliation with neighboring administrations, and delivering essential public services that the local communities greatly need,” the President said.
Reassuring the rest of the country, Hassan Sheikh stressed that the new administration would not divide Somali regions, but instead strengthen cooperation and federal coexistence:
“The formation of the North-East administration does not mean separation from the neighboring regions. The Federal Government will make every effort to support cooperation and peaceful coexistence in those areas and among neighboring communities that have long been bound together as family and kin,” he stated.
The President pledged full Federal Government support to help the North-East State work with neighboring regions and integrate peacefully into the national federal system.
