Mogadishu, Somalia – Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre announced a major cabinet reshuffle on Monday(17-March-2025), replacing key ministers, including the Minister of Defense, at a critical time when Somalia is waging war against Al-Shabaab.

Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur had been regarded as a close ally of Turkey, which has played a significant role in Somalia’s defense sector. His replacement, Jibril Abdirashid Haji Abdi, had previously stated that he would prioritize hiring members of his own clan if given the opportunity, raising concerns about his approach to governance.
Timing of the Reshuffle
The timing of this shake-up is significant, as the Somali government has been engaged in a major military offensive against Al-Shabaab. Recent reports indicate that the government is increasing the use of airstrikes and ground offensives to weaken the group.
