Dhanaane (Dawan Africa) – Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has claimed that its elite Gaashaan unit conducted a targeted overnight operation in the Dhanaane area of Lower Shabelle, destroying a facility allegedly used by the Al-Shabaab militant group to store explosive materials.
In a statement on X on Monday, NISA said the raid was carried out based on "fully verified intelligence" suggesting that the site was being used to plan attacks targeting civilians.
“The facility was being used by Khawaarij [Al-Shabaab] to prepare explosives intended for use against the Somali public,” the agency claimed.
No civilian casualties were reported. Officials stated that the operation was intended to pre-empt a significant terror plot.
This is the second high-profile security raid in the area in recent weeks. On June 3, NISA also claimed that its Gaashaan forces killed a senior Al-Shabaab commander in Dhanaane, who was reportedly overseeing militant activities in Dhanaane, Jilib Marka, and Gandarshe.
Somalia has stepped up its military campaign against Al-Shabaab over the past year, with joint operations conducted across the South West, HirShabelle, and Galmudug regions, often in collaboration with local security forces and international partners.
